Africa Ghana: John Mensah plays down Rennes talks

The general captain of Ghana John Mensah has said he is unaware of any interest from his former club Rennes.

Reports have been rife in the local media the French Ligue 1 side are considering a move for the Ghana international as a cover for compatriot John Boye, who is part of coach Kwesi Appiah’s 26-man provisional list to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mensah has been training with The Red and Blacks for weeks to regain full fitness after knee injury setbacks that have affected his club career.

“I’m training with Rennes,” the Ghanaian Chronicle quoted him. “They have been great to me. Rennes have welcomed me and allowed me to use their facilities. I love the club, there are great guys here but nothing has been said to me.”

The 30-year-old who spent two seasons on loan at Sunderland also trained with English side West Ham earlier this season but a deal to return to the Premier League fell through.
