Algeria Algeria: Noureddine Morcel, best athlete of the fiftieth anniversary!

The title of the best athlete of the fiftieth anniversary (1962-2012) of Algeria awarded to Noureddine Morcel is legitimate to many observers.

Olympic champion and four times world champion in 1500 meters, the athlete has raised the Algerian flag on top of major international competitions.

On 1 September 1991, the Algerian won his first world title by finishing the 1500 m in 3 min 32 s 84 well ahead of Wilfred Kirochi (3 min 34 s 84) and Hauke Fuhlbrügge (3 min 35 s 28).

Before this feat, he won the title four times world champion in the 1500m from 1991 to 1995. In 1996, Noureddine Morceli became the first Algerian to win the Olympic title in 1500. The Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) saw the end of a brilliant career in Algeria.

The early success of Morcel go as far back as to 1982 when he was 12 years old. According to the APS, “the young Noureddine participated  his first competition in running a mass test mof 3 km along the beach Ténès.
He won his first national junior cross country in 1986 and already holds records promising middle distance with 1 min 50 s at 800 m and 3 min 50 s 7 to 1 500 m. ‘
