After Australia collapsed against West Indies in the last round of Super Six fixtures, England also failed to make the final of the World Cup.
Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor were at the crease and going well against New Zealand in Mumbai when the news came through that Australia had lost to West Indies meaning that England could no longer qualify.
On Sunday, Australia will now face West Indies again for the final and England will face New Zealand for third place.
England, the holders, therefore paid the penalty for losing their first game of the tournament to Sri Lanka, and then going down to Australia at the Super Six stage.
