Cycling Cycling : The British team sprint won a fantastic bronze

The first evening of the track cycling World Championships saw success for Becky James and Victoria Williamson in the team sprint as they beat Australia into the Bronze medal position.

Earlier in the day the British pairing had exceeded expectations by qualifying faster than the Australians, a huge achievement considering Vicky Williams had stepped in the replace the injured Jess Varnish. The road to the Championships has not been all smooth for Becky James either who battled with illness and fitness issues throughout 2012. Read more about Becky here.

“I’m just absolutely buzzing. I’m so shocked. Me and Vicky, we did not expect to be having a medal ride-off whatsoever. It was always going to be hard against the Aussies in the final. I can’t believe it, my first world medal. I’m so happy.”

“Last year was the hardest year for me. Just to come away with a medal on the first day, I’m just looking forward to racing the rest of the week now. Everything is a bonus from now on.”

The gold medal race was won by an in-form German team with China taking the silver.
