Serena Williams described the decision to deny Svetlana Kuznetsova a wild card into the Dubai Championships as “weird.”
Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 2, dropped out of the top 50 after a knee injury curtailed her 2012 season.
Since her return in January, Kuznetsova has notched three top-10 wins, made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and improved from No. 71 to No. 48 this week.
