Football Nigeria: New heart operation for Nwankwo Kanu

kanu_nwankwo1The former Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu underwent a new heart surgery this weekend. The former Ajax striker (1993-1996) went under the knife to “fix a problem with the heart,” said the Nigerian press Onyebuchi Abia, coordinator of the Kanu Heart Foundation.

The intervention took place in a hospital in Cleveland, where he went for his “annual medical examination.” According to Abia, the double African Ballon d’Or (1996 and 1999) “recovered.”

Winner of the Olympic football tournament in 1996, Nwankwo Kanu (37) had undergone open-heart surgery after doctors of Inter Milan have found a heart defect during his transfer in 1996.

He later continued his distinguished career including a stint in the English league, where he twice won the Premier League with Arsenal (2002 and 2004). Kanu had created his foundation which helped build five hospitals in Africa to treat heart disease.
