According to reports, at least seven people were killed and dozens injured Saturday in a stampede at the Abuja National Stadium where there was a recruitment competition for national service.

The spokesman of the hospital, Tayo Haastrup told AFP: “There was a recruitment operation of immigration services in the stadium (…) there was a stampede and the victims were rushed to the national Hospital.”

According to preliminary results, only one of the entrances of the stadium, with a capacity of 60,000 seats, was opened on Saturday morning for the recruitment operation of the immigration service.

The stampede, according to them, took place when thousands of candidates have tried to access the center of the stage.

The national hospital would be overwhelmed and could not accommodate all the victims who were eventually sent in other places for care.
