Africa Nigeria : Former NFA boss died in UK

Former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association, NFA, Chief Efiom Okon has died at the age of 88 in Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom, the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed Friday.

According to a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF Assistant Director, Media, Ademola Olajire, Chief Okon died suddenly on  the first day of the new year.

Chief Okon was Secretary General of then Nigeria Football Association between 1959 and 1961, and was also interim Chairman of the NFA between 1989 and 1990, and substantive Chairman of the body between 1991 and 1992.

NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu, said: “We have only just received a mail from a daughter of Chief Efiom Edem Okon saying that the man died in the United Kingdom on 1st January, 2013 while on holiday.

“It is very sad. Chief Okon was one of those who worked very hard to sustain the good name of then Nigeria Football Association, and also to ensure that our dear country maintained its enviable reputation in international football.

“We pray that God will grant him eternal rest and give fortitude to those he has left behind to bear the big loss.”

Meanwhile, the NFF stated that it gathered that the late Chief Okon will be buried at the Trinity Methodist Church, Rainsford Road, Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom on Friday, February 15, 2013.
