Euro 2020 Golf/California: De Jonge struggles

Brendon de Jonge who is a top Zimbabwean professional golfer is in danger of missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open after a difficult opening round at Torrey Pines tougher South Course on Thursday in San Diego.

Harare-born golfer found the going to be tough in his third appearance of the season in as many weeks, after posting an opening round two-over-par 74 to finish in tie for 123rd on the leader board.

Starting his round on the front nine of the North Course, De Jonge never really settled into his groove as he dropped a shot on the par-four opening hole.

De Jonge started the back nine with four straight pars before sinking a birdie on the 14th, but another bogey on the 16th ensured he finished 10 shots adrift of co-leaders American Brandt Snedeker and South Korea’s KJ Choi, who both finished on seven-under par 65.

Although he clawed his way back with a birdie on the second, a further bogey on the fourth followed by a double bogey pegged him further back from the leaders.

De Jonge will need a brilliant performance this weekend to avoid missing the cut for the first this season.
