Euro 2020 Golf/Phoenix Open: Phil Mickelson loves the atmosphere

Mickelson says he loves the unique atmosphere at the Waste Management Phoenix Open where he now sits six shorts clear with a round to play.

“It’s hard to describe,” said Mickelson, who always draws the biggest roars at the tournament having gone to university at nearby Arizona State.

“The way the people are here and the size of the crowds at this tournament, unique to any event on tour, it’s pretty cool.”

“To have gone to school here, the way they treat me is awesome,” added the left-hander, a two-time winner of this event already, after his third round 64.

The roars for Mickelson were off the radar after he almost made a hole-in-one at the stadium hole par three 16th where 20,000 noisy fans line the fairway and surround the green.

He explained: “I just hit a hard nine (iron). I like to hit something hard there because you feel that adrenalin that the crowd provides and that turned out pretty good.”

If Mickelson shoots a 65 on Sunday he ties the PGA Tour low scoring record of 254 set by Tommy Armour III. However, that isn’t the main thing on his mind.
