Euro 2020 Tennis: 1st round in Bogota to fight by Pennetta

Flavia Pennetta edged Alexandra Panova at the Copa Claro Colsanitas in the Italian’s first match since August. Fellow Italian Francesca Schiavone also moved on.

The winners of four of the previous Copa Claro Colsanitas tournaments were in action on Tuesday, including 2005 champion and 2006 runner-up Flavia Pennetta.

The fifth-seeded Pennetta had been out of action since Montréal last August because of a right wrist injury that eventually required surgery. And sure enough, in her first match in over six months she came out rusty, falling behind to 2012 Bogotá runner-up Alexandra Panova, 64 32. However, Pennetta then showed off some of the form that previously took her to the Top 10 in the world and won 10 of the next 13 games for a 46 63 63 triumph.

Next up for the Italian is Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino. She was pushed in her opener here, but was a 62 16 63 winner over Colombian wildcard Yulia Lizarazo. The Spaniard surely loves playing in Colombia, as she captured her lone WTA title here last year and just last week secured her first WTA 125K Series title in Cali.
