Africa CAS: Sudan to be stripped off 2014 World Cup qualifier win

On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected the Sudanese football Association’s appeal against an October ruling to award Zambia a 3 – 0 win by default.

The appeal  was lost against FIFA’s decision to strip the Falcons of Jediane’s for fielding an ineligible player in the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Zambia which led them to drop to a third position in Group D leaving Zambia to occupy the position.

“The CAS panel in charge of this case rejected the arguments of the SFA after noting that the secretariat of the Confederation of African Football had indeed informed the SFA that (Ali) would be suspended during the next official match of the national team,” the court said.

“In case of doubt, it should have verified the player’s eligibility with the competent FIFA and/or CAF authorities.”

A fine of $6, 430 was given to Sudan in addition to the deduction of points when Zambia lodged their complaint earlier on following the issue during the quarter-finals where Ali scored the former AFCON champions in Sudan’s 2 – 0 win in Khartoum.

Five winners out of the 10 African qualifying groups who will advance to the final round in October and November will represent Africa in the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Sudan would have  to meet Ghana on 23rd Marsh in Kumasi whiles Zambia plays in Lesotho during the next round of the qualifiers for the World Cup.
