Africa China : Beckham welcomed by the Malian Kanoute

Several scores of journalists gathered at the entry to the Workers Stadium on Thursday morning. As has become the custom since his arrival in China, Becks created a stir as he met with board members and visited the installations at the capital club, currently equal top of the league after two rounds and well-placed in their AFC Champions League group.

In the 66,000 seater venue, the British star greeted the youngsters from the club’s youth academy before watching a training game, in the company of Frédéric Kanouté. The former Lyon, Tottenham and Sevilla striker presented his new club to Beckham. “The club asked me to welcome David Beckham because we’ve met several times on the pitch,” explained the Mali international. “It’s a great pleasure to have him here. His visit has created a great buzz here, especially as Paris Saint-Germain are growing in popularity here in China. The Chinese people are very passionate about their football and follow all the teams with great players, and Paris are one of those sides.”

After an exchange of Paris Saint-Germain and Beijing Guo’an shirts between the two players, the Parisian midfielder headed off for more rendezvous in the capital ahead of a trip to the city of Qindao on Friday morning.
