In his opening match at the Family Circle Cup, the U.S.  faced the Italian Camila Giogri that she beat in straight sets, 6/2, 6/3.

Winner of the tournament in 2008 and 2012, Serena will face for the third round the winner of match between Sabine Lisicki and Mallory Burdette.

Seeded No. 4 of this tournament in Charleston, Sloane Stephens was released in two sets by Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6/2, 6/0.
