Kenenisa Bekele is the second in a family of six children. His potential was detected by one of his teachers while he played football in his school. Winner of regional cross country championships in his age category in 1997, he quickly rose in representing his province at the Junior Championships in 1999 in Ethiopia. The sixth place allows him to be selected in the national junior team to compete in the World Cross Country Championships.

The Ethiopian realized an original performance in 2002 by winning the world title of cross both the long, and the short. The native of Bekoji will reissue this double in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 before winning the long race only in 2008. Due to an injury to the Achilles heel, the 2002 season on track of the athlete will be without performance.
Kenenisa Bekele won twenty eight major titles in international competitions he has participated: three gold medals at the Olympic Games (10,000 m in 2004 and Double5 000 m-10 000 m in 2008), five gold medals at the World Championships on track (10,000 m in 2003, 2005 and 2007, and doubled 5000 m-10 000 m in 2009) and twenty world titles at the world championships of cross-country (including twelve individual).

He is the current holder of the world record in the 5,000 m (12 min 37 s 35 on 31 May 2004 in Hengelo) and 10,000 m (26 min 17 s 53 on 26 August 2005 in Brussels).
