Williams, 31, claimed the 17th Grand Slam title of her career on Sunday by beating Victoria Azarenka 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.
Clinton tells BBC Radio 5 live: “She always wanted to be someone who opened up new avenues for girls and women and she was able to play highly competitive, high concentration tennis, win but always be concerned about why she was really doing it.
