Africa SAFA’s update on Madiba’s funeral arrangements

ss-120601-mandela-tease.photoblog600Following further discussions with the Director-General of Sport and Recreation of South Africa, the SAFA (South African Football Association) are happy to report the following information to assist you in partaking in the events leading to the funeral of the late former State President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela:

A full programme of activities has been announced by government and further amplified by the Honourable Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula on Saturday, 7 December 2013.

Members are encouraged to observe the following:

1. Sporting activities are encouraged and all sports codes have been requested to make a statement in honour of Madiba;
2. All players and officials at matches are asked to wear black armbands during their matches;
3. All matches must be preceded by a moment of silence in honour of Madiba;
4. All sports events scheduled for Sunday, 15 December 2013, must be cancelled and Members are encouraged to participate in some form of remembrance of the values that Madiba stood for;
5. All flags at football matches must be flown at half mast;
6. All SAFA Members are encouraged to engage the media in their respective areas and the community to talk about the close relationship between Madiba and our sport;
7. All SAFA Members are encouraged to prominently participate in the memorial services being held at different venues around the country (see attached schedule of events for details on where these services are being held around the country);
