The Swiss beat the World No. 2, three times champion of the Australian Grand Slam, after some 3 hours 58 min in five sets, 2/6, 6/4, 6/4, 3/6, 9 / 7.
Novak Djokovic had not experienced defeat at the Australian Open since 2010 against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It was also at the same stage of the competition.
Wawrinka will play the semi-final against Tomas Berdych. Earlier, the Czech had eliminated world No. 3 David Ferrer, 6/1, 6/4, 2/6, 6/4.
