Nigerian Players abroad Iwobi Retains First XI Start As Everton Share Spoils With Southampton

Alex Iwobi was once again handed a starting XI jersey as Everton push for a Europe competition ticket was rented after a 1-1 draw against Southampton at Goodison Park.

Iwobi who was trolled on Twitter for his below par performance in Everton 1-0 loss to Tottenham on Monday on, still retained his place in Carlo Ancelotti first team.

The Super Eagles midfielder who is preferred to operate from the wing by Ancelotti almost gave his side the lead in the 22nd minute as his stinging shot was kept out by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

 He could not complete full time as he was substituted for Djibril Sidibe in the 46th minute.

Since he joined the Toffees, he has scored two goals with one assist in 26 appearances for the Merseyside club in all competition.

Richarlison 43rd minute equalizer saved Everton from a defeat after James Ward-Prowse missed a penalty before Danny Ings scored to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in 31st minute.

Everton are 11th position with 45 points, seven points behind sixth placed Sheffield United for the Europa League ticket.

Following the stalemate, Iwobi’s manager expressed dissatisfaction over their performance for not showing more personality.

Ancelotti in his post-match conference said his players gave the vistors too much space in the forst half.

“We need more personality when we have the ball,” Ancelotti told evertontv.

“We miss easy passes with the quality the players have.

“With more personality, you cannot miss.

“It was a difficult game and we didn’t perform so well.

“The first half was not good, we lost a lot of fights for second balls.

“The second half was better… we started well and had some good chances.

“We were more in control.

“But in the end we lost a little bit of energy.

“In the first half, we left too much space in the middle of the pitch.

“After half-time, we tried to cover that area and Southampton didn’t have the opportunities they had in the first half.

“The goal we scored was fantastic, a fantastic pass and fantastic finish.

“But to win this game we needed more intensity and more control.”

Everton will be to write their wrong on Sunday and pick the maximum points when they travel to the Molineux Stadium to play Woves.
