Nigerian Players abroad How Nigerian Players Wrapped Up 2019-2020 Premier League

It was a mixed-feeling for Nigerian players in the Premier League after the 2019-2020 season was concluded on Sunday.


The Last day games of the 2019-2020 season which was almost marred by the coronavirus pandemic produced the pulsating and emotional outcome.


Despite Liverpool already crowned as champions and Manchester City finished second even before the last, there was so much to fight for on Matchday 38.


The race for third and fourth to pick the remaining last two tickets for UEFA Champions League, Europa League and fight for survival was what made the final game intriguing.

In all these, Nigerian players in the Premier League were much more involved in actions for their clubs.


While some players celebrated to have reached Europe competition for next season, others will have to play in the Championship.


Africa Top Sports monitored how Nigerian players performed for their clubs and who went to Europe competition.


ODION IGHALO- Manchester United 


Odion Ighalo ended the 2019-2020 Premier League season without starting a single game.


The former Super Eagles forward didn’t score a single goal in the Premier League.


He came as a substitute for Anthony Martial in the 90th minute in what was his 11th appearances in his loan spell.


However, it will be on record that he was part of the Red Devils squad that qualified for Champions League this season.

Wilfred NDIDI- Leicester City


Ndidi is inarguably most outstanding Nigerian player in the Premier League this season.

He played 90 minutes as Leicester City narrowly missed out of the UEFA Champions League following their 2-0 loss to Manchester United.


The midfielder also finished the season as the best tackler alongside Manchester United right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka.


This is the third consecutive time he will be awarded as best tackler of the season.
He made 32 appearances and scored two goals one assist and six yellow cards.


Kelechi Iheanacho – Leicester City


Iheanacho resurgence after the coronavirus pandemic was key to Leicester City picking vital points.

The forward, several time proved he could step up the big shoes of Jamie Vardy come next season.


He capped up the season returning to the starting XI on the last league day against Manchester United.


The former Manchester City forward couldn’t finish the game as he was substituted by Ayoze Perez.


Iheanacho made 20 appearances for the Foxes this season and scored 5 goals with four assists and a yellow card.


Alex Iwobi- Everton


Alex Iwobi was not part of Everton squad on the final day of the 2019-2020 season as the Toffees were defeated 3-1 at Goodison Park.

One could have expected Iwobi to make judicious use of the playing times he enjoyed when the league restart to win Carlo Ancelotti’s heart.


However, it was not a too nice season for Iwobi who joined Everton at the beginning of the season.


The winger made 25 appearances with most of his games coming since Carlo Ancelotti took over.

But he was able to score just one goal without making any assist.


Everton finished 12th this season missing out of Europa competition.


Busayo Saka- Arsenal


With the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) hoping to snatch the winger who has played for England junior cadet to represent his fatherland, we included Saka on our list of Nigerian player.


Saka was an unused substitute on the last day of the Premier League as Arsenal only played for pride defeating Watford 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium.


The 19-year old had a breakthrough season for Arsenal since making his debut for the Gunners this season.
He played a vital role for Mikel Arteta in reaching the FA Cup final.


The winger made 26 appearances for Arsenal and scored just one Premier League goal.


He provided five assists also and received 6 yellow cards.


Isaac Success- Watford

Isaac Success will not want to talk much about the just concluded Premier League season as he spent most of the season nursing injuries.


No wonder he was not part of Watford squad who were relegated on the last day of the league after they falling 3-2 to Arsenal.

One Success this season made just five appearances for the Hornets and ended the season without a goal.


He will join Watford in the Championship if he don’t get any offer.
