Africa Victor Osimhen : 35th Nigerian to play in the Italian Serie A

Victor Osimhen was under the spotlights of several Premier League clubs for this summer transfert window. Arsenal and Chelsea among others. But in the end, it was Napoli of Gennaro Gattuso that won the race signing the Nigerian striker.

As reports from Completesports.com, Victor Osimhen has become the 35th Nigerian player to play in the Italian Serie A. The Nigerian International completed his move from LOSC Lille of France to Napoli a week ago.

In fact, 34 Nigerians played in the league representing various clubs in the Serie A before Osimhen. There were Sunday Oliseh being the first ever from the country to play in Italy. Many Nigerian talented players followed in the Italian first division such as Taribo West, Obafemi Martins, Ogenyi Onazi..

Oliseh, the trailblazer, excelled himself at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations. A competition from which he got chance to join Reggiana, becoming the first Nigeria international to feature in Serie A. He spent just a year at Reggiana before heading to the German Bundesliga with FC Cologne. He later returned to Italy in 1999 to join Juventus under coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Victor Osimhen  for his part, only signed for the French Ligue 1 club last year from Sporting Charleroi. After impressing on loan at the Belgian First Division A in the 2018-19 season. The 21-year-old was in in good shape for the Ligue 1, with the forward scoring 13 goals in 25 appearances as Lille finished the 2019-20 season in fourth place.
