News Barcelona Sacks Abidal As Club Director

Barcelona have ended their contract with Eric Abidal as part of measures to overhaul the club.

The Blaugrana on Monday axed Quique Setiens following their humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.

The Catalans announced the termination of their former defender on Tuesday with Ronald Koeman set to take over as new manager.

A statement on the club official website, thanked Abidal for his services to the club.

“Barcelona and Éric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties. 

“The Club would publicly like to thank Éric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the blaugrana family.”

His career was truncated by liver timour which resulted to a transplant.

He played mainly for Lyon and Barcelona and won 18 titles with both teams combined, including two Champions League trophies with the latter.

Abidal returned to Barcelona in June 2018, replacing Roberto Fernández as the club’s director of football
