Africa FIFA : Towards Rules Relaxation for Sports Nationality Change

FIFA is about to relax its sports nationality laws. Soon, it will be possible for a player under 21 to change national team despite official matches in his adoptive country.

Today, a player who plays an official match for his adoptive country can no longer change his sports nationality. But there are some requests for relaxation of the law that are causing FIFA to weaken.

At the Congress on the next 18 September, the body will propose a new rule to the member associations.

This new arrangement should especially be beneficial for players who have played only a few minutes with a selection in official match. Now 3 official matches with an adoptive country for 3 years can still authorize a change of sports nationality.

In 2018, the previous law had prevented Munir El Haddadi from competing in the World Cup with Morocco. He who entered only in the 77th minute in a Euro qualifying match for Spain in September 2014.
