Nigerian Players abroad Kalu, Maja, Moses Set For Ligue 1 Opener Battle


Super Eagles duo Samuel Kalu and Moses Simon are set to put friendship aside for 90 minutes and help their club secure victory in the opening game of the 2019-2020 Ligue 1season.

Bordeaux will host Nantes on Friday in what will be the first match of the French Ligue 1 following the postponement of Olympique de Marseille game against AS Saint-Ettiene.

Kalu joined Bordeaux  On 6 August 2018, on a five-year contract but struggled last season making 22 appearances and scored just one goal and two assists in all competitions.

Moses joined Nantes 15 August 2019 on loan from Levante.

After his loan spell Nantes triggered the option to buy the winger and he signed a four-year contract.

Also another Nigerian international forward, Josh Maja is also expected to feature for Bordeaux in the game in his debut.

Ligue 1 confirmed in a statement that the game between Kalu’s Bordeaux and Nantes will be played at 7:00pm Nigerian time.

“Following the postponement of the match between Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Etienne, and in agreement with the clubs and the broadcaster, the Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 1 match between FC Girondins de Bordeaux and FC Nantes – initially scheduled for Saturday 22 August 2020 at 17:00 – has been brought forward and will be played at 19:00 on Friday 21 August 2020, broadcast by Telefoot. 

“The LFP thanks both clubs for their understanding and their ability to adapt.

“In view of the medical results communicated by Olympique de Marseille on Tuesday 18 August, the national COVID commission has indicated to the LFP’s Competitions Commission that the virus is circulating within the Marseille club.

“According to the protocol for the organisation of matches, the LFP’s Competitions Commission decided to postpone the match between Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Etienne to Wednesday 16 or Thursday 17 September 2020, subject to the evolution of health conditions at Olympique de Marseille. 

“The final date will be determined in agreement with the match broadcaster.”
