Top News UEFA May Consider Adopting One-Legged Knockout-Ceferin

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin says they are considering making the knock out stage of the European competition on one -legged knockout.

There was a new format to the knockout stages of the Europa League and Champions League this season due to the impact of the COVID-19 on football.

The quarter-finals of both competition was played as one-legged game with Portugal and Germany hosting all the games.

On Sunday Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain to lift their 6th UCL title at the Lisbon Stadium in Portugal.

While Sevilla defeated Inter Milan on Friday following 3-2 win to also claim their 6th Europa League title.

Ceferin in an interview of Sunday said the UEFA Exevutuve will have to think about adopting the new method in the future.

“We were forced to do it but in the end we see that we found out something new.

“So we will think about it in the future for sure.”

The UEFA boss is optimistic that with the one legged knockout, teams will be forced to take goals 

“If it is one match, if one team scores then the other has to score as soon as possible. 

“If it is two-legged system then there is still time to win the next match.

“But of course we also have to think about the fact that we have less matches and broadcasters say ‘you don’t have as many matches as before, this is different’ – so we will have to discuss when this crazy situation ends.”

However, this season will still regain the normal two-legged games as UEFA cannot change the rules uh til the 2024-2025 season.
