Nigerian Players abroad Mikel Captain Stoke City To Victory Against Leeds United

Nigerian international John Mikel Obi captained Stoke City to a 2-0 victory over Premier League outfit Leeds United on Tuesday.

Mikel missed last week Saturday Carabao Cup against Blackpool but returned against Leeds in a pre-season friendly.

The game was Stoke’s second pre-season match as they intensify their preparation for the 2020-2022 Championship season.

The 32-year-old was handed the armband as he established himself as a calm presence in a well-marshalled and disciplined five-man midfield.

In a clash played across two halves of 40 minutes, the armband fell upon Mikel after captain Ryan Shawcross was forced off inside the first seven minutes.

The former Tranzonspor midfielder however was substituted out in the 65th minute due to match sharpness.

Nathan Collins broke the deadlock for the Potters from a corner after the visitors failed to clear their lines in a first half that lacked goal.

Stoke doubled their lead in the 51st minute through Lee Gregory who guided his head into the corner.

Campbell completed the victory as he powered home a pass from Ince to make it 3-0.

The Potters will travel to St. James’ Park on Saturday to face Newcastle United for a final match before the season starts on September 12 against Millwall.
