Nigeria Amokachi Backs Okoye To Gets Better After Awful League Debut

Former Super Eagles forward Daniel Amokachi has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye after his awful debut start.

Okoye was handed his first Dutch Eredivisie debut at goal at home as Sparta Rotterdam lost 4-1 to Heerenveen.

The 21-year old is among the 23-man squad called up by Gernot Rohr ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone.

After his debut, he was heavily criticised on social media by some Nigerians.

However, Amokachi defended the young goalie in his programme ‘Bull Pit’ on Brila FM as monitored by Africatopsports.com on Monday morning.

The legendary forward said, “He should see the positive side and if it has to do with his mistakes then it is something he must correct.”

And as a coach you must be very wary the way you communicate with your goalkeeper.

“For example (Carlo) Ancelotti left (Jordan) Pickford out and he was asked before the game against Newcastle and he said he needed to rest.

“But we all know it’s because Pickford has conceded lot’s of goals.

“You don’t expect him to come out and Pickford has been bad lately because that can break him.”

Okoye has made three appearance for the Super Eagles with all coming in friendly games.

He could be handed his international competitive appearance when Nigeria plays Sierra Leone in Benin on November 13.

Then four days later, they will travel to confront the Leone Stars.
