UEFA Champions League Champions League Matchday 3 Round Up: PSG, Man United Stunned

Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday produced lots shocks as well as sensational comebacks bringing the group stage first legs to halfway.

Wednesday’s games from Group E to H, recorded 27 goals in total with two away wins and just one draw as Istanbul Basaksehir stunned Manchester United in Turkey.
Africatopsports.com monitored the matches and brings to you group by group results.

 Group E

Chelsea 3-0 Rennes

Chelsea maintained to unbeaten streak in the Champions League following a convincing 3-0 against Rennes at Stanford Bridge.
The Blues are yet to concede in this season’s Champions League winning their last two games.
Two Timo Werner penalties in the first half and a Tammy Abraham’s second half close range finish did the damage against a 10-man Rennes side.
The victory further strengthened Chelsea’s lead at the top of the group with seven points ahead of Sevilla on goal difference.

Sevilla 3-2 Krasnodar

In the second group game, 10-man Sevilla fought from 2-0 down to defeat Krasnodar 3-2 in Spain.
The Europa League champions lacklustre start to the game saw them almost pay dearly for their complacency.
Magomed Suleymanov put the visitors ahead from a fine free kick after the referee had overturned a penalty call from Sevilla.
Then Marcus Berg buried the ball into the corner from the spot as the Russian side went 2-0 ahead inside 21 minutes.
Former Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic headed Julen Lopetegui side back to contention before the break.
However, captain Jesus Navas was sent off after he impeded Krasnodar player from a possible goal scoring opportunity.
Despite playing with a man down, Sevilla kept the momentum piled on the pressure in the second half.
 Youssef En-Nesyri equaliser brace turned the tide on it’s tail.
The substitute scored in the 69th minute to level for his side before finding the net again in the  72nd minute to complete the comeback and secure their second win.
Devil’s have now gone 14 games unbeaten in European competition at home.

Group F

Zenit 1-1 Lazio

Felipe Caicedo came off the bench and earned his side a share of the spoils against Zenit St Petersburg.

Aleksandr Erokhin broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 32nd minute after a cagey first half.

But Caicedo denied the Russian side the joy of celebrating three points.

Club Brugge 0-3 Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland cannot stop scoring as he his brace helped Borussia Dortmund to run away with all three points in Belgium.
Thorgan Hazard opened scoring for Dortmund and in the opening 32 minutes Haaland doubled thr lead.
Later on, the former Salzburg player struck his brace for the day.
He has now score 14 goals in his first UEFA Champions League appearances .

Group G

Barcelona 2-1 Dynamo Kyiv

Barcelona extended their unbeaten streak in the UEFA Champions League group stage to 23 following a 2-1 win.
Lionel Messi scored from the penalty in the early minute of the game but Dynamo scared the Catalans.
It was more like the best of goalkeepers for both teams

Marc-André ter Stegen who returned back to the squad produced a superb saves to keep the hosts ahead.

Ruslan Neshcheret was also outstanding but was only beaten beaten  by an emphatic Gerard Piqué header before Viktor Tsyhankov’s finish ensured a thrilling finale.

Ferencváros 1-4 Juventus

Alvaro Morata continued to impress since he rejoined Juventus.
The Spaniard scored twice to take his goal tally to six in his last six games for the Bianconerri.
Álvaro Morata tapped in from close-range to give the visitors an early lead, before sweeping in Ronaldo’s low cross for his second.
Paulo Dybala capitalised on a poor back pass to add a third and Lasha Dvali put through his own net before Franck Boli’s consolation.
Christian Ronaldo also made his UEFA Champions League outing of the season after his COVID-19 result returned negative.

Group H

Başakşehir 2-1 Manchester United

Manchester United perfect start to the competition was halted by a less fancied Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey.

Riding on the back of 2-1 away win and 5-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig, the odds favoured Manchester United to stroll past their opponent.

But the Turkish Super Lig champions put an end to the Red Devils dominance over a Turkish side.

A first-half counterattacking goals from Demba Ba in the 13th and Edin Višća in the 40th minute  set the Turkish titleholders on course for their maiden UEFA Champions League points.

Anthony Martial halved the deficit before the break, and though United were frustrated thereafter, they almost pinched a late equaliser only for Alexandru Epureanu to sensationally prevent a Mehmet Topal own goal.

Leipzig 2-1 Paris

After an embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Matchday 2, Leipzig are now levelled on points with Manchester United at the top of Group H.

The German side came from behind to beat a 10-man Paris. Saint-Germain 2-1.

Ángel Di María gave the visitors an early lead, but also had a penalty saved by Péter Gulácsi.

Leipzig equalized through Christopher Nkunku’s 42 minutes goals before Emil Forsberg’s spot kick completed the come back.

PSG have now  lost two matches in a UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since 2004/05.
