AFCON Super Eagles To Play Sierra Leone Behind Closed Doors

The Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations qualifier game against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will be played behind closed.

This was disclosed by a letter sent to the Edo State Deputy Phillip Shuaibu by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Ministry of Sports.

The Edo State Government had planned to throw the doors open for spectators to come and cheer the Super Eagles at the refurbished Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

However, Africatopsports.com learnt that the November 13 game will now go on without any spectators.

The PTF advised the Edo State Government that allowing spectators into the stadium will be tantamount to breaching COVID-19 guidelines.

The letter read in part;

The ministry wishes to bring to your attention that in compliance with condition of no gathering agreed upon by the ministry and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 before the Federal Government opened up football and contact sports, the match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will not have any audience and no gathering save for players, match officials and government officials from both countries.

“Testing must be conducted on all of them prior to the match.”

There were earlier reports that around 6,000 to 7,000 will be allowed into the newly refurbished ground for the game.
