AFCON Caf prepares teams on preventive measures for Afcon matches

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has prepared member associations on preventive measures for Covid-19 ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The race for qualification to the Cameroon Afcon finals resumes mid this month with qualifying matches across the continent.

However, the landscape has changed in view of the pandemic and most matches will be played under strict preventive guidelines for participating teams.

In view of this, Caf met virtually member associations to prepare them for the matches. The association has, through a press release, confirmed the meeting.

Caf says the meeting attracted 60 security officers from its affiliates and those from the continental body.

Caf head of security Christian Emeruwa says the meeting discussed how security will be observed in international matches on issues such as accreditation and safety plans.

“Our goal is to ensure that there is uniformity in safety and security operations across Africa with an emphasis on making sure that the matches are played under a safe and secured environment.

“We are mindful of the enormous task ahead, especially how to keep spectators and supporters away from the stadium. Hence, we felt the need to guide all National safety and security officers and appointed Caf safety and security officers on best practices under these conditions. The protection of the players and officials before, during, and after the match is of great importance in our operations. We need to ensure effective coordination between safety and security officers and all other health officers that will be involved in delivering each match….” he says.
