Africa Soccer CAFCL: Zamalek to play Gazelle FC in first round

CAF Champions League finalist Zamalek will begin their 2020/2021 campaign against Chadian club Gazelle FC in the first round.

Zamalek last week lost the CAF Champions League title to rivals Al Ahly in a pulsating encounter in Egypt.

The Whites who last won the title in 2002 will be hoping to take another shot again when the new season gets underway.

They are now drawn against Gazelle FC who walked over Djibouti club GR/SIAF in Sunday’s preliminary match.

Gazelle FC booked their place to the next round after their opponent failed to show up for the game.

The first-leg was supposed to take place in N’Djamena, Chad, however, ahead of the game the Djibouti FA sent the CAF a letter, stating that their representatives will not travel without revealing the reasons behind it.

After waiting 45 minutes, the game’s referee blew his whistle, announcing Gazelle FC as the winner of the preliminary round encounter.

Gazelle FC will now face Zamalek in the first round of the competition, with the first-leg set to be played between the 22/23 December in Chad, two weeks before the return-leg in Cairo.

Zamalek will be meeting Gazelle FC for the second time after both side met in 2013 CAF Champions League preliminary round.

The Egyptian side ran a 7-0 riot aggregate with two goals each for Ahmed Gaafar, Mohamed Ibrahim, and Abdoulaye Cissé, and goal to Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan in the first leg.

The return leg in N’Djamena ended 0-0 then.

Reigning champions Al Ahly will await the winner of the game between Niger side AS SONIDEP and Mogadishu City.
