Africa Soccer MALAWI : LOSING START FOR COACH KABWE

Silver Strikers Manager, Dan Kwabe

Zambian coach Dan Kabwe made a losing start to his reign at Silver Strikers FC in Malawi following a 2-1 loss to Civil Service United at Civo Stadium in a Lilongwe derby played on November 29 2020.

Kabwe, the two-time Zambia league winner with childhood club Zanaco, joined Silver early this year with a big reputation, having spent time learning coaching at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger between 1998 and 2000.

However, that counted for nothing as Civil scored two second-half goals through Lanken Mwale and Raphael Phiri to cancel out debutant Foster Bitoni’s 46th minute goal for Kabwe’s side.

Phiri headed into the net the winner from a corner-kick after substitute Mwale, who had replaced Muhammad Sulumba, equalized for Civil.

Elsewhere, rookies Ekwendeni Hammers recovered from their 1-0 loss to Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday to snatch a point from star-studded Be Forward Wanderers in a 1-1 draw at Mzuzu Stadium in the Northern Region.

On Saturday, Zeliat Nkhoma scored the only goal of the game as 2016 champions, Kamuzu Barracks, beat the Hammers a 1-0 loss.

However, Hammers collected a point on Sunday. Hammers were the first to score straight from Steve Madimba’s free-kick which sailed past William Thole, before Ted Sumani’s header levelled matters late in the second-half for the visitors.

In Blantyre, Ntopwa FC went to the top of the table after thumping Moyale Barracks 3-0 at Kamuzu Stadium through goals from Mphatso Magaleta, George Nyirenda and Arthur Moffat.

On Saturday, Nyasa Big Bullets fired blanks as they started the Super League title defence with 0-0 draw against Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial capital.

A stone’s throw away from Kamuzu Stadium, former Bullets mentor, Rodgers Yasini started his reign at Mighty Tigers with a comfortable 2-1 win over TN Stars at an empty Mpira Stadium.

Left-back Martin Nsema curled in the opener from the left corner after 20 minutes before Tony Mbulu, whose elder brother Richard Mbulu plays for Baroka FC in South Africa, grabbed the second later in the game whereas Trouble Banda pulled one back for Stars.

In the Central Region, Mafco announced their return to the top-flight league with 1-1 draw against fellow returnees Red Lions with Peter Kasonga scoring for the hosts and Stanley Duwe for the Lions.

There were more draws in the Northern Region where Savenda Chitipa United came from behind courtesy of Emmanuel Muyira’s goal that cancelled out Karonga United’s Bakilinyo Mwakanyongo’s strike at Karonga Stadium.
