Nigeria NWFL orders fresh COVID-19 test for players and officials

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League, Aisha Falode has warned that  all NWFL Premiership clubs must conduct a fresh COVID-19 test.

Falode said that any club that do not have a fresh Covid-19 test certificate for their players and officials before the Week 5 matches on January 13, would be disqualified from the league.

Falode in a statement made available on the NWFL official website on Monday said all the participating clubs have between January 6 and 13, 2021 to conduct a mandatory fresh Covid-19 test for all their players and officials.

 She said, “It’s only logical for the clubs to update the status of the players especially after the Yuletide break which may have seen majority of them travel home to celebrate with their families whose Covid-19 status are not known.

The NWFL board together with the Secretariat thought it wise not to postpone the Week 4 matches by one week, but to give the clubs a one week mandate to conduct fresh test to avoid unforeseen circumstances and situation that may most probably put the NWFL into disrepute.

“So, we prefer to wait for another week to allow the clubs conduct a fresh Covid-19 test. Defaulters won’t be spared in the interest of ensuring proper Covid-19 preventive measure as stipulated by the federal government of Nigeria.”

She noted that, for NWFL Premiership clubs not to record any case of Covid-19 infection since the 2020/2021 season kicked off on December 9, it’s a dint of hard work on the side of the NWFL board, secretariat and the clubs. And we are not ready to lower our guard as it concerns the women’s league in Nigeria.

The test results must be forwarded to the NWFL Secretariat, for clubs to receive the go ahead to continue in the league.”
