Nigeria PREMIER LEAGUE : IHEANACHO BACK TO SUBSTITUTES BENCH AS JAMIE VARDY RETURNS

Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s time in Leicester City’s starting XI might be over following the return of chief hunter Jamie Vardy from a lengthy injury lay-off.

The prospect of Kelechi getting regular now rests on whether manager Brendan Rodgers might fancy featuring both strikers upfront.

The Nigerian made way for Vardy as Leicester drew 0-0 with Wolves in a Premier League match played on Sunday afternoon.

Kelechi had enjoyed rare game time in recent weeks while Vardy was out injured.

However, the Super Eagles forward was substituted in the 63rd minute as Vardy finally returned to action.

Kelechi scored his first Premier League goal when Leicester beat Fulham 2-0 on Wednesday.

On Sunday, Kelechi struggled and was replaced in the second half by Vardy who nearly scored with a header.

Leicester are on position three with 39 points from 23 games while Manchester City lead with 47 points from 21 matches.

Speaking earlier, Leicester boss Rodgers hailed the 24-year-old Nigerian striker.

Kelechi, the other night, he was terrific in his work. He scored a great goal and he will be high in confidence. We all know Jamie is so important to us, but the beauty of it is, coming out of an operation, we don’t need to rush him. Just to have him available, whether to start or from the bench, it’s a huge boost for us. It’s not a problem. It’s great Kels has got his goal because he’s worked so hard. That’s not just in games he’s played, but every day in training, so he got his reward for that,” he said.

In a late kick-off on Sunday, City hammered defending champions Liverpool 4-1 to open a five-point gap over second-placed Manchester United.

Liverpool, who scored through Mohamed Salah, are 10 points behind City. Rahim Sterling, Phil Foden and İlkay Gündoğan (double) were scorers for City.

During the game, Algerian Riyad Mahrez was in City’s starting line-up before Brazilian Gabriel Jesus replaced him later on.
