AFCON Onuachu Late Strike Breaks Benin Home Record Against Super Eagles

Paul Onuachu came off the bench and scored a stoppage time goal to hand Super Eagles a 1-0 win against Benin Republic.

 
It was the first time that the Super Eagles ended their unbeaten streak on home soil after a staggering eight years. 
 
 
Despite already qualified for the 2021 Africa Nations Cup following Lesotho 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone, Nigeria gave a message of intent against their Beninoise opponent.
 
Gernot Rohr started the trio of Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho and Henry Onyekuru in front.

Nigeria were in total control of the game with Iheanachp stingying the gloves of Benin goalkeeper in the 7th minute.
 
In the 24th minute Osimhen almost broke the deadlock for the Super Eagles but his shot went straight to the hand of the goalkeeper.
 
Another clear chance to score came on the 44th minute when the dazzling Zaidu Sunusi run down the left flank before he pulled a cross to the danger zone.
 
Onyekuru towered high and headed the ball but again the Beninoise goalkeeper made a save to deny.
 
Both teams could not fathom a goal with Super Eagles having the best chances.
 
Nigeria returned in the second half looking more determined to go forward.
 
Osimhen got another clear cut chance with a chance as he beat the goalkeeper before his low shot hit the upright before  Zaidu blasted the rebound over the bar.
 
Rohr brought in Onuachu in the 69th minute and in the added time from a corner kick to end winning drought against Benin.
 
The team will now return to Lagos on Sunday to prepare for their final game
