AFCON AFCON QUALIFIERS : City Council shelves Malawi Afcon parade plans

AFCON 2021

Malawi failed to hold its parade on Tuesday celebrating the Flames qualification to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary, Alfred Gunda, confirmed through a statement the shelving of the parade.

Gunda says Blantyre City Council advised FAM against the Flames doing the parade.

The council made its stance on the matter due to fears over the Covid-19 pandemic.

With that advise, we need to sit down and look at how best we can do so that as we are celebrating, everyone is safe so we will communicate as to when the parade will be executed,” Gunda says.

The Flames beat Uganda in Blantyre courtesy of Richard Mbulu’s 16th minute goal to book their place to the Afcon finals from group B.

Malawi finished the group with 10 points following the back-to-back wins including over South Sudan last week.

It was only the third time that the Flames have qualified for the Afcon finals the last time being in 2010.

Burkina Faso also qualified from the group.
