AFCON Ndidi, IheanachoTo Miss Leicester Game Due To Covid-19

Super Eagles duo Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho and others are set to miss this weekend actions for their club in the English Premier League and the Championship.

Nigerian players in the Premier League and Championship will have to self isolate for 10 days in line with COVID-19 guidelines in the UK.

William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, Semi Ajayi, Iheanacho and Ndidi were all on international duty for Nigeria in the just concluded 2021 Africa Nations Cup Qualifiers.

However, following the new UK government guidelines on COVID-19, the players could miss this weekend games for their respective clubs.

The new rules states that players with provision of a negative COVID-19 test can self isolate five days.

Elite sports people are eligible for the test to release programme after observing five days isolation under Guidance Six of the legislation,” it reads.

“On return, travelling athletes and support staff should return to following protocols as agreed within their sport as per the Stages One to Three Guidance.

“They are required to self-isolate for 10 days on their return (this can be reduced under ‘Test to Release’), apart from when competing in or training for an elite sports event; providing essential support to a domestic elite sportsperson in their competition or training; or providing essential operational support to the running of an elite sports event.”

Super Eagles defeated Lesotho 3-0 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2021 AFCON qualifier.
