Nigeria Troost-Ekong Stars As Watford Defeat Barnsley Away

William Troost-Ekong produced a Man Of The Match performance to help Watford beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in the English Championship.

Troost-Ekong who returned to England on Wednesday after captaining Nigeria to pick the ticket for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), started for the Hornets.

Despite fair bit of jet lag by Troost-Ekong and some of his teammates who were on intentional duty, they still gave an impressive a account of themselves to keep their automatic ticket back to the Premier League alive.

Sheffield Wednesday never once let the Hornets have their own way as they gave them a good run for their money.

A 17 minutes own goal scored by Tom Lees who put the ball through his own net with a quality cross by the Adam Masina.

Only one team has scored fewer than them on the road so they looked very much ripe for picking.

However, the Hornets never really threatened to go through the gears, like they did at home to Bristol City, again against Birmingham and away at Rotherham.

They were in control without ever being dominant.

Nigerian International, Isaac Success had two good opportunities inside the box and João Pedro flashed one past the far post with his left foot, but the fluency of the attacking play was definitely a notch or two below what we had seen in the previous five home wins.

The victory has further strengthened Watford who dented Barnsley record of not to have conceded a first-period goal in their own backyard since December 5.

After the game, William Troost-Ekong was voted as Man of the Match
