Africa Soccer ZAMBIA : Champions Nkana FC hire coach Chambeshi

Zambia MTN Super League champions, Nkana FC have hired Beston Chambeshi as their new head coach.

The former Zambia under-17 and 20 coach has replaced Kelvin Kaindu who was sent on a three-week paid leave last week.

A statement released on Thursday from Nkana reads: “Nkana Football Club has appointed former Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club coach Beston Chambeshi as its new head coach with immediate effect.

“The 2017 AFCON U-20-winning coach returns to the Kitwe outfit as head coach for the fourth time, the last time being from June 2017 to December 2019.”

Last week, Nkana Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kapwepwe Mutale, said Kaindu had agreed to “proceed on leave in view of a string of bad results that the team has posted in the recent past.”

Kaindu’s deputy Kaunda Simonda was placed in temporary charge of Nkana.

Nkana hired the former Buildcon Football Club coach last December to replace Manfred Chabinga, who too, was sent on an indefinite leave after a string of poor results.

Kaindu also coached Zimbabwean sides, Highlanders, Triangle and How Mine.

Upon hiring him, Nkana President Joseph Silwamba, had challenged Kaindu to reposition the club towards defending the league title and go beyond the group stages of the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League.

The prospects of Nkana defending the title are slim as they have in the relegation zone, placed 16th on the 18-member log table with 21 points from 21 games.

Zesco United lead the table with 46 points from 22 games.

In the Confederation Cup group phase, Nkana are on position three in Group D with six points from five games, the latest being their 1-0 home loss to Pyramids on Wednesday.
