African players abroad ZAMBIA : Steve Gerrard’s Rangers eye Zambian striker

Steven Gerrard-led Rangers from Scotland have emerged as the favourites to sign in-form Zambian striker Fashion Sakala.

Record Sport reports that Rangers are set to offer the Belgium-based forward a four-year contract this month.

The website suggests that Sakala has already held positive talks with Rangers and is close to agreeing personal terms.

He plays for KV Oostende in Belgium and the club is said to be aware of Rangers interest in their man.

However, Record Sport has quoted Belgian legend Gert Verheyen as saying the 24-year-old Sakala is too raw to make the grade at Rangers.

Verheyen, who played for Rangers, said while the striker has had his best season in Belgium where he has netted 13 goals, he needs to improve.

“A few bigger Belgian teams were interested in him—Antwerp was one of them—in the winter because he’s had a very good season and he’s a free transfer which is a big factor, especially nowadays, when most clubs seek players who don’t cost too much money,” Verheyen he said.

Can he do that if he joins Rangers? I don’t know but it’s another level he still has to reach. He scored three goals in his first season, eight in his second and 13 this season. So he’s progressing and he can score goals but he’s not a cool killer—the guy who scores two out of three chances. He puts one in from three.”
