Africa Soccer MALAWI : Chawula becomes first female coach for men’s top-flight league team

Karen Chawula has written a piece of history in Malawi football after becoming the first-ever female coach for an elite men’s football club in the Southern African country.

Blantyre-based Ntopwa FC unveiled the 43-year-old lady on Wednesday as their coach in the top-flight TNM Super League.

Ntopwa owner and technical director (TD), Isaac Osman, told the press in Malawi that he has never doubted the competence of Chawula.

“Her first assignment will be leading the Amaghetto Kids [Ntopwa] this weekend as we travel to the Northern Region to face Chitipa United and Karonga United in the TNM Super League.

We believe the coming in of Karen will bring confidence to our players as we are still searching for maximum points since the resumption of the top-flight league,” Osman told the local media in Malawi.

Chawula has since remained a model of modesty saying she would not promise much as this was her first job for an elite men’s team.

“I have worked with Ntopwa under-20 boys team and I also coached Angaliba under-17 boys that was competing in the FMB League [now First Capital League,” she told Africa Top Sports.

I am not intimidated at all coaching the males. I am familiar with Ntopwa and I believe that with the support of the backroom team, we can achieve something.”

Chawula is also a coaches instructor and holds CAF C-Licence and has led women’s teams in Malawi to several trophies.

Her first assignment are this weekend as Ntopwa are on the road.

Ntopwa are on position 14 on the 16-member log table with 14 points from 15 matches.
