Africa Soccer MALAWI: Flames coach recalls Cyprus-based midfielder Chimodzi

Malawi’s Flames coach Meke Mwase has released a 24-member squad to face Tanzania in a friendly on 13 June 2021.

Mwase has recalled into the squad Cyprus-based midfielder Tawonga Chimodzi, son to legendary Young Chimodzi.

The Flames face the Taifa Stars at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam to fine-tune for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Mwase said Chimodzi has earned the call-up following his outstanding performance for First Division side, Karmiotissa Polemidion FC.

We have seen how he is playing, we have seen his videos and I have talked to him. As I have always said, the national team is for everyone and we will try everyone who is playing well, including those based here,” Mwase said.

Surprise inclusion in the squad is first-choice goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe who has not played for his club, Nyasa Big Bullets, for a month as he is recovering from an injury.

There is also an omission TNM Super League leading striker Maxwell Gasten who has been scoring for fun for table-topping Silver Strikers.

Malawi qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon from Group B alongside Burkina Faso while Uganda and South Sudan missed out on the ticket.
