African players abroad MALAWI : Scotland-born defender accepts Flames call-up

Scottish-born defender Kieran Ngwenya has finally accepted Malawi national football team call-up.

The 18-year-old, who was born to a Malawian father and Carribean mother, has for many years been linked with ancestry to South Africa.

However, the Aberdeen FC wing-back recently set the record straight that he had no roots in South Africa, paving the way for Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to contact him.

FAM has since announced that Ngwenya will join the Flames on Sunday ahead of the June 13 warm up in Tanzania.

Ngwenya told FAM media that he felt honoured to receive the invitation to the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations finalists, the Flames.

“It’s an honour to be given an opportunity to represent the Flames, I’m excited to get involved and meet the team,” he is quoted saying.

Ngweya spent the just-ended season on loan at Scottish League One side Cove Rangers. He has since rejoined Aberdeen.

Malawi coach Meck Mwase has since welcomed the availability of Ngwenya at a time the Flames are short of options in the left-back position following the injury of Precious Sambani.

I would like to thank FAM for making an effort to bring the player to join us.  I would also like to thank the parents and his agent Elliot Fillingham for making it possible. Kieran has come at the right time as he will provide an immediate option on the left back following the injury of Precious Sambani,” Mwase told FAM.

Malawi has very few Europe-based players such as Charles Petro, Peter Banda (Moldova), Francisco Madinga (Dila Gori, Georgia) and Tawonga Chimodzi (Cyprus).

All the Europe-based players are part of the Flames set-up.
