African players abroad MALAWI : Flames forward Linje signs for Japanese club

Malawian international Jabulani Linje has signed a two-year contract with Japanese fourth tier league side, Shibuya City FC .

The former Mighty Wanderers playmaker has joined City FC on free transfer after severing his ties with J-3 League side, Yokohama SSC.

He told ATS in an exclusive interview that he was delighted to start a new chapter in his career in Japan.

I have waited patiently for this opportunity. It was not easy to get this deal as there were other contractual issues I had to sort out with my former employers. Finally, they granted me my wish to leave,” he said.

The 26-year-old joined Yokohama in 2018 from Wanderers, courtesy of their former sponsors, Be Forward Limited.

Linje, who launched his professional career at Civo United in Lilongwe, is the first-ever Malawian to sign for a Japanese team.

He is capped four times and last featured for the national team at the Cosafa Cup in 2017.

Shibuya FC was called Tokyo City FC but changed its name last year to respect the wishes of the people of Shibuya.

The club was formed in 2014 and its vision is to earn promotion to J-League by 2025. The team currently plays in the Japanese Football League.
