Kaizer Chiefs fans were on hand to welcome the Amakhosi back into the country on Wednesday afternoon at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
The Amakhosi were on continental duty in Morocco for their CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly. A game that ended in a 3 – 0 victory to the Egyptians.
Kaizer Chiefs were supposed to arrive in the country on Sunday already. However, their chartered plane suffered mechanical complications. This unforeseen technical problem forced them thus to remain in Morocco until Tuesday.
“The team was due to arrive home this morning. But due to flight mechanical concerns, we are still in Morocco. We will issue out a travel update in due course.” A Kaizer Chiefs statement read.
Despite going down in the final, Kaizer Chiefs fans still offered their side a fitting reception after a marvelous CAF Champions League campaign.
The Glamour Boys first made history by qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stages before backing that perfomance up with a string of unbelievable Knockout stage performances.
The journey eventually came to an end all the way in the final where Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly simply outclassed a 10-men Kaizer Chiefs in Morocco.
There’ll be little rest for Kaizer Chiefs’ players with the Carling Black Label Cup set to take place against rivals Orlando Pirates on 01 August 2021.
The Amakhosi won’t be competing on the continent next season after failing to win the final.
Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu FC will be representing South Africa in the CAF Champions League while Orlando Pirates and Marumo Gallants will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.
