Tokyo 2020 Tokyo 2020 : African teams’ fashion steals show at Olympic Games opener

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games’ opening ceremony saw most African teams stealing the show with their distinct sense of fashion on Friday.

Team South African torch-bearers Chad Le Clos and Phumelela Mbande spotted colourful animal print short-sleeved shirts paired with vellies-leather field shoes.

South Africa media reports that four young designers from KwaZulu-Natal were the brains behind the design of the team’s uniform.

For Malawi, there was no much sense of fashion in the dressing of the torch bearers who opted for simple office suits.

However, the sight of Team Ivory Coast was unmistakable. They wore long-sleeved shirts with green scarves around their shoulders and black pairs of trousers.

Team Kenya, too, was not left out. They paraded in red purple/deep blue shirts and brousers plus black shirts and trousers.

On the other hand, Team Tunisia opted for decent navy blue suits and white shoes.

Team Nigeria’s dressing is difficult to describe but it is all their traditional long sleeves tops and pairs of trousers.

The team for Angola was also spotted in traditional uniforms prompting  @Olympics to tweet: “Those Angola uniforms.”

Overall, Tonga led the way in fashion–once again–with a shirtless Pita Taufatofua in front.

At the launch, International Olympic Committee President Bach invited His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan, to declare open the Games.

I declare open the Games of Tokyo, celebrating the XXXII Olympiad of the modern era,” he said amid fireworks.

The first athletes to enter the stadium were from Greece, the historical home of the Olympic Games.
