Dstv Premiership Benni McCarthy wants to surpass Kaizer Chiefs Champions League feat

South Africa’s AmaZulu FC coach Benni McCarthy has set himself bold targets for next season.

He wants to surpass Kaizer Chiefs’ performance of reaching the CAF Champions League final.

Chiefs defied their domestic form in the DSTV Premiership in South Africa to reach the Champions League final which they lost 3-0 to Al Ahly.

Now, McCarthy speaking at a ceremony where AmaZulu unveiled sponsorship partners, new players and kit, said he believes the Kwa Zulu Natal-based club can go a step further than Chiefs.

We are not going in there to fill the numbers, but we see ourselves as contenders,” the former Bafana Bafana star said in a speech which ATS monitored online.

No disrespect to anyone but if they can reach the final of the CAF Champions League, we can do one better and I am genuine and do not mean to be disrespectful. They [Chiefs] are a great club internationally and domestically. Now, we get our opportunity to go internationally and get one better.”

McCarthy won the Coach of the Year Award last season after steering AmaZulu to a second place finish in the league.

AmaZulu also used the occasion to unveil new players and new kit plus business partners ahead of the new season.

The club unveiled new arrivals in midfielders Keagan Buchanan, Mxolisi Kunene (formerly of Maritzburg United), Tercious Malepe defender from Ukrainian Premier League side FC Mynai, midfielder Tshepang Moremi (from Bizana Pondo Chiefs), Philani Zulu (ex-Chiefs defender), midfielder Lindani Shange (Amazulu MDC team and Gambian midfielder Matarr Cesaay (ex-Casa Sports in Senegal).
