Qatar 2022 Cameroon v Malawi: Team News: Line-Ups

Cameroon welcome Malawi at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde to kick-start the 2022 World Cup second round qualifying  journey on Friday evening.

Both teams are not in the best of forms, but it is fair to place the favourites’ tag on the Indomitable Lions and not the Flames.

Ahead of the game, Malawi coach Meck Mwase has rung changes to his starting line-up while trying to be pragmatic against such powerful opposition.

Experienced Tawonga Chimodzi, Denis Chembezi have earned selection ahead of Chimwemwe Idana and Gomezgani Chirwa.

Upfront, Richard Mbulu has received the nod but for once, he will not have the company of his striker partner Gabadinho Mhango who has been relegated to the bench.

In midfield, winger Yamikani Chester returns after missing some five games and there is also a starting role for up-and-coming attacker Peter Banda.

Players to watch

Cameroon are a factory for football talent and today, they should have many options unlike Malawi.

Bayern Munich striker Eric Choupo Moting is the one to look out for with his bustling runs and an eye for goal.

There are also other attackers of note such as Stephane Bahoken, Aboubakar Vincent and playmaker Zambo.

Malawi have a modest squad but on their day they are good enough to get a point or even snatch a win on the road.

Orlando Pirates strike Mhango has been the star of Malawi in the recent years but he is off form; hence, Malawi will bank on hardworking forward Mbulu playing off Gerald Phiri Junior.

Solid defending is a must for Malawi and the job of organizing the defence lies on Limbikani Mzava with Chimodzi controlling the midfield.

Head to Head

Overall, Malawi have won once against Cameroon while losing and drawing thrice in all competitions.

The last meeting between the two teams was in the year 2018  in Lilongwe and it ended goalless.

The Flames registered their only win over the Indomitable Lions at the All-Africa Games in Kenya in 1987.
