Malawi Ngwenya stars in Arbedeen B team’s cup win

Malawi’s up-and-coming defender Kieran Ngwenya provided an assist for Arbedeen FC as they beat Arbroath 4-1 on post-match penalties to secure SPFL Trophy round-of-16 berth in Scotland on Saturday afternoon.

Ngwenya, who was excused from the World Cup qualifiers due to travel restrictions, was heavily involved in the game played at Pittodrie Stadium.

He provided an assist for Michael Ruth to put Arbedeen in front in the 74th minute.

However, Arbroath leveled matters through Henderson in injury time for the game to descend into post-match penalties which Arbedeen won 4-1.

The Malawian left-back was born to a  Malawian father and Caribbean mother but the Malawi FA convinced him to play for the Flames.

Ngwenya, aged 19, earned his debut for the Flames during  a friendly played in Tanzania months ago.

With first-choice left-back Precious Sambani injured, Ngwenya is expected to make the Flames’ final squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.

Malawi has very few players based in Europe, including Charles Petro (Moldova), Tawonga Chimodzi (Cyprus) and Francisco Madinga (Georgia).
