COSAFA Banyana Banyana seal semis spot: Malawi keep fingers crossed

Holders South Africa are through to the Cosafa Women’s Championship semifinals after beating Mozambique 3-1 in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Striker Sibulele Holweni scored twice and Melinda Kgadiete added the other goal for the hosts.

Mozambique’s consolation came from Cidalia Cuta’s header at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

With those goals, Banyana Banyana sealed Group A top spot with seven points from three games.

South Africa finished one point ahead of Malawi, who too, made it back-to-back wins when they beat Angola 2-0 at Madibaz Stadium also on Monday.

The Scorchers from Malawi settled for second place on six points and their prospect of snatching the second overall best semifinal across the three groups depends on outcomes of Group B and C matches.

Malawi have a superior goal aggregate compared to Group B second-placed Zimbabwe after having eased past the Angolans courtesy of Limbikani Chikupira and Madyina Nguluwe’s second half goals.

The Scorchers also have to wait for the outcome of Group C decisive games between Zambia and Uganda tomorrow Tuesday.
